In this square, you’ll find several of Brasov’s must-see landmarks, including the House of Merchants, the Black Church, and the Clock Tower of the Old Town Hall, where you can enjoy stunning panoramic views. Nearby, the Adormirea Maicii Domnului Orthodox Cathedral hides in an alley, offering a corner full of history and untold stories.
Black Church (Biserica Neagră)
The Black Church is one of the most important Gothic monuments in Southeastern Europe and one of Brasov’s main attractions. Its name comes from the fire that blackened its walls in the 17th century. Inside, you can admire oriental carpets brought by Saxon traders and a magnificent organ, one of the best-preserved in Europe.

Getting lost in the narrow alleys of the historic center is an essential experience. From the Sforii Street, one of the narrowest streets in Europe, to the Catherine’s Gate, every corner is full of charm. Republicii Street, with its shops and restaurants, is perfect for enjoying the local life.
Fortifications and Towers
Surrounding the city, you’ll find the Brasov fortifications, a defensive structure built in the 13th century to protect the city from Turkish and Tatar invaders. At one of the corners, you can see the White Tower, another of the city’s landmarks, which has stood since the 15th century and served as a watchtower and defense post. On the other side of the fortifications, the Black Tower is another of Brasov’s attractions. It had the same function as its counterpart, but over the centuries, it was used as a prison for the area’s most dangerous criminals.
Bran Castle
Located just 30 kilometers from Brasov, Bran Castle, popularly known as Dracula’s Castle, is associated with the famous vampire character from Bram Stoker’s novel and inspired this iconic work of gothic horror. This is also the perfect time to attend various festivals like the Gastronomic Festival at Lake Noua (August 9-11) or the Teutonic Fest Hărman (July 27-28), a medieval festival with historical reenactments, theater performances, and medieval music.
- Winter (December to February): Perfect for skiing in Poiana Brașov and enjoying the festive Christmas atmosphere. Be sure to pack warm clothing.
- Autumn (September and October): Stunning mountain landscapes with autumnal colors, ideal for hiking in the area.
How to Get There and Get Around
- From Bucharest: A two-and-a-half-hour drive or train ride. The Brasov train station is well connected.
- Around the City: Walk through the charming Old Town, which is small and easy to explore. To visit the surroundings or reach the city, renting a car is cheap and easy. Roads are generally in good condition.
