What to See and Do in Gan, the Other Side of Paradise

Gan, an island shaped like a hidden gem in the Addu Atoll in the Maldives, combines the serenity of beaches with impressive marine biodiversity. This island, home to an airport full of stories about its runway, offers access to crystal-clear turquoise waters, colorful reefs, and a culture that fascinates any visitor. Discover what to see and do in Gan, Maldives, and prepare for your next adventure in this magical corner of the Indian Ocean.

Located at the southern tip of the Maldives, Gan is one of the largest and most accessible islands in the Addu Atoll. Known for its natural beauty and unique history, it has become an emerging destination for travelers seeking more than just sun and beach. Gan stands out for its crystal-clear waters, rich marine life, and relaxed atmosphere. These are just some of the reasons why it’s one of the most sought-after destinations for 2025.

In this article, I invite you to discover what to see and do in Gan, from water activities to cultural experiences. We will also explore its main attractions, such as the beaches and coral reefs, and I will provide practical tips to make your trip unforgettable. Let’s head to the Maldives!

History of Gan, Maldives

The history of Gan is fascinating and unique within the context of the Maldives. Unlike other islands in the archipelago, Gan has a past marked by its strategic use during World War II and the Cold War. In 1941, the British established a military base on Gan, which served as a strategic point in the Indian Ocean.

This base not only transformed the local economy but also left a cultural imprint that is still visible today. The British influence can be seen in architectural elements and in certain cultural habits of the local inhabitants. Although the base closed in 1976, many of the buildings constructed by the British remain standing, and some have been repurposed for tourist and community purposes. I recommend taking some time to visit these facilities, as it’s like stepping back in time to a recent historical period in an instant.

In addition to its modern history, Gan is one of the oldest inhabited islands in the Maldives. Archaeological remains dating back to pre-Islamic times have been found in the region, indicating a rich cultural and religious heritage. Exploring this history is essential for those seeking to understand more than just the "beach paradise" of other islands.

Best Beaches in Gan

The beaches of Gan are the dream of any sea lover. Here, you will find some of the most pristine and less crowded coasts in the Maldives, perfect for relaxation or water activities. Among the best beaches to visit in Gan, I would highlight the following:

Gan Beach

This main beach is perfect for those looking for a relaxing experience. With white sand and turquoise waters, it’s an ideal spot to disconnect from the world and immerse yourself in natural beauty. The palm trees lining the beach offer natural shade, and the tranquil atmosphere is perfect for reading a book or enjoying a picnic, imagining what it would be like to live here for a lifetime.

Hulhudhoo Beach

Located near Gan, this beach is famous for its coral reefs, making it an ideal spot for snorkeling. Here, you can observe a wide variety of marine life, from colorful tropical fish to sea turtles. Moreover, its serene atmosphere makes it a great place for those seeking a more private experience.

Feydhoo Beach

Feydhoo, a neighboring island of Gan connected by road, offers equally spectacular beaches. Its coast is less developed, making it perfect for those wanting to explore a more natural environment. Walking along its shores at sunset is an unforgettable experience. Don’t forget your phone, camera, or drone, although you may need to check with the hotel where you're staying for permissions.

What to Do in Gan: Must-Do Activities

In addition to relaxing on its beaches, which is great in itself (and perhaps some may be content with just a couple of days), Gan offers a variety of activities that will make your trip a complete experience.

The most exciting and thrilling activity is snorkeling and diving. The coral reefs surrounding Gan are spectacular, with biodiversity that includes reef sharks, manta rays, and dolphins. Several diving schools on the island offer guided excursions for both beginners and experts. Snorkeling is another excellent option for exploring the nearest reefs without needing a diving certification. The colorful fish will follow you and keep you company. If you remember, take a camera or phone that you can submerge to share the incredible images you’ll capture with your loved ones.

Since it’s a peaceful, elongated island connected to others by roads and bridges, renting a bike, or borrowing one from your accommodation, is a fantastic plan to explore the area and discover new places. Biking around the island is an eco-friendly and fun way to enjoy the landscape, interact with locals, and uncover hidden gems.

On top of that, don’t miss the opportunity to visit the small local villages and experience their culture and traditions. The Maldivians are known for their hospitality, and in Gan, you’ll have the chance to try local dishes, learn about their handicrafts, and enjoy a slower pace of life.

What Currency Do I Need in the Maldives?

The official currency of the Maldives is the Maldivian Rufiyaa (MVR), commonly referred to as rufiyaa. Each rufiyaa is divided into 100 laari. Typically, 1 euro is equivalent to about 15 rufiyaa, but I recommend using Ria’s free currency exchange tool to find out the current price in euros (or vice versa) for excursions, hotels, etc.

One of the easiest ways to start your trip without worries is to have the local currency on hand. The simplest, most convenient, and fastest way to obtain Maldivian rufiyaa is through Ria’s home delivery service or at any of their offices (with over 500,000 branches in more than 190 countries). They offer some of the best exchange rates, and you won’t even have to leave your home.

Where to Eat in Gan: Local Cuisine

The cuisine of Gan is a delicious blend of local flavors and British-influenced recipes due to the British presence on the island. Some dishes you must try include mas huni, a traditional breakfast made of tuna, grated coconut, onion, and lime, and garudhiya, a fish broth served with rice. Also, don’t miss out on traditional sweets like bondibaiy, a rice pudding flavored with cardamom.

For an authentic culinary experience, I recommend local restaurants such as The Palm Village, known for its fresh fish and seafood, or Equator Village Restaurant, which combines international and local cuisine in a charming setting.

Practical Tips for Traveling to Gan

  1. How to Get There: Gan has an airport that connects directly to Malé and other regional destinations. From the airport, you can easily reach your accommodation by taxi or hotel-provided transport.
  2. Climate: The best time to visit Gan is from November to April, when the weather is drier, and the temperatures are pleasant. Avoid the monsoon season, from May to October. However, if you can only visit during these months, it may rain for a few hours, but you can still enjoy the rest of the time on this wonderful island.
  3. Electricity: In the Maldives, the plugs have three prongs (Type G), but it’s very likely that your hotel will have adapted outlets for different types. Still, always carry an adapter to connect your devices.
  4. Transportation: Renting a bike or scooter is a great way to get around the island and explore the surrounding areas. A paved road runs along the western side of the atoll, connecting the islands via bridges over its spectacular sea.

After all this information on what to see and do in Gan, I’m sure you’re already looking for flights to the Maldives. Don’t think twice—it’s a destination you deserve to experience at least once in your life. Are you coming to the other side of paradise?
