Things to See in Aalborg, Vikings in Northern Denmark

If you are wondering what to see in Aalborg, get ready to discover a city that mixes Viking history, Renaissance architecture, and an unexpected nightlife. Located in northern Jutland, Aalborg is one of the oldest cities in Denmark and, at the same time, one of the most dynamic. Walking through its old town is a journey through time, from the Viking ruins of Lindholm Høje to the modern cultural center Nordkraft. Additionally, its fjord and lively streets make it a perfect destination for those looking for history, good food, and a touch of fun.

Aalborg is much more than an industrial city in northern Denmark. Its Viking past, cultural scene, and charm by the fjord make it a surprising destination. Did you know that the largest carnival in Scandinavia is held here? Or that you can visit one of the liveliest streets in the country, full of historic bars and restaurants?

Traveling to Denmark usually makes us think of Copenhagen, but beyond the capital, there are gems like Aalborg, the fourth largest city in the country. Located in northern Jutland, this city has reinvented itself without losing its essence. It was an important trading port in the Viking era, an industrial center in past centuries, and today, a destination that surprises those who decide to explore it. Additionally, in 2025, traveling to Aalborg is 20% more affordable thanks to the recent drop in international flight prices.

How to Get to Aalborg

Getting to Aalborg is easy thanks to its airport, located just 6 km from the city center. There are direct flights from several European cities, and if you travel from Spain, it is most common to stopover in Copenhagen. From the airport, you can take a bus that takes about 15 minutes to reach the center or a taxi for about €25.

Another option is to travel by train or bus from Copenhagen. The train journey takes about 4 hours and is an excellent way to enjoy the Danish landscape. Buses, such as FlixBus, can be cheaper, although the trip is a bit longer.

What to See in Aalborg

Aalborg is not a city crowded with tourists, which makes it even more special. Here you can walk leisurely through cobbled streets, discover museums, enjoy quality gastronomy, and if you like partying, experience one of the liveliest nights in Denmark. These are some of the must-see places in Aalborg that you cannot miss:

Lindholm Høje

One of the most important Viking sites in Scandinavia. Here you will find more than 700 graves and remains of ancient Viking dwellings. The site’s museum offers an excellent exhibition about Viking history and how they lived in this region over a thousand years ago.

Aalborghus Slot

A Renaissance castle built in the 16th century that, although it cannot be visited inside, has a beautiful courtyard and gardens open to the public.

Jomfru Ane Gade

If you want to experience Aalborg’s nightlife, this street is the ideal place. Full of bars, restaurants, and pubs, it is one of the liveliest areas in Denmark.

Kunsten Museum of Modern Art

This museum, designed by architect Alvar Aalto, houses a fascinating collection of Scandinavian contemporary art.

Jens Bang’s House

One of Denmark’s best-preserved Renaissance houses, built in 1624 and famous for its striking façade. A must-see in Aalborg.

Obels Plads Square

In winter it transforms into a free ice-skating rink, while in summer it is an ideal place to enjoy a drink on its terraces.

Where to Eat in Aalborg

One of the most emblematic dishes is smørrebrød, a slice of rye bread with ingredients like pickled herring, smoked salmon, eggs, or roast beef, often accompanied by sauces and pickles. Another essential dish is stegt flæsk, considered Denmark’s national dish, consisting of crispy pork strips served with parsley sauce and potatoes.

Frikadeller, a type of pork or beef meatball, is another classic served with potatoes and brown sauce. For seafood lovers, stjerneskud is a popular option: a dish with fried fish fillet on rye bread, accompanied by shrimp, caviar, and remoulade sauce. Aalborg is also famous for akvavit, a spiced spirit made in the city and usually served cold with traditional meals.

Regarding places to eat in Aalborg, for a tight budget, Søgaards Bryghus is a microbrewery offering traditional Danish food in a relaxed atmosphere. Its menu includes hearty dishes like roasted meats and potatoes, along with an excellent selection of craft beers. For mid-range dining, Restaurant Sans combines French and Danish cuisine in a modern and cozy environment. It has affordable options with remarkable quality, including well-prepared vegetarian dishes. For a special treat, I recommend Mortens Kro, one of the best restaurants in Aalborg for fine dining lovers.

Where to Stay in Aalborg

Aalborg has accommodation options for all budgets. The city center is ideal to be close to tourist attractions, restaurants, and Jomfru Ane Gade street, famous for its nightlife. Some options according to your budget:

  1. Radisson Blu Limfjord Hotel: Ideal for those seeking comfort in the heart of the city, with fjord views.
  2. Cabinn Aalborg: An economical option but well-located, near major attractions.
  3. Kompas Hotel Aalborg: A modern hotel with a good breakfast included and spacious rooms.

Practical Tips for Traveling to Aalborg

The official currency is the Danish krone (DKK). I recommend carrying some cash for small shops or local markets, although cards are widely accepted in most places.

The easiest and most convenient way to get Danish kroner is through Ria home delivery or at any of its offices (more than 500,000 branches in over 190 countries). One of the best exchange rates without leaving home or exchanging in “strange places.”

Climate and best time to visit Aalborg:

Summer (June-August) is ideal for enjoying good weather. In winter it is cold, but the city has great Christmas charm.

Plugs:

Type K, compatible with standard European plugs, so if you live in Spain, no adapter is needed.

Transport:

Aalborg is easy to explore on foot or by bike, but it also has a good urban bus network.

Notable events:

In May, the Aalborg Carnival is held, one of the largest in Scandinavia, with parades and street parties. If you go during this time, remember to book accommodation in advance.

Aalborg is a city that combines history, culture, and fun in a welcoming and easy-to-explore environment. From its Viking past to its modern gastronomic and nightlife scene, there is much to discover in northern Denmark. If you are looking for a different and authentic destination, Aalborg deserves a place on your upcoming travel list.
